What I’m Hoping to Read this Week

Before Christ called her daughter . . .

Before she stole healing by touching the hem of his garment . . .

Elianna is a young girl crushed by guilt. After her only brother is killed while in her care, Elianna tries to earn forgiveness by working for her father’s textile trade and caring for her family. When another tragedy places Elianna in sole charge of the business, her talent for design brings enormous success, but never the absolution she longs for. As her world unravels, she breaks off her betrothal to the only man she will ever love. Then illness strikes, isolating Elianna from everyone, stripping everything she has left.

No physician can cure her. No end is in sight. Until she hears whispers of a man whose mere touch can heal. After so many years of suffering and disappointment, is it possible that one man could redeem the wounds of body . . . and soul?

Tangled Webs

But peace isn’t on the agenda once he crosses paths with publishing executive Dana Lewis, a neighbor who is nursing wounds of her own. Someone seems bent on disrupting her stay in the lakeside cabin she inherited from her grandfather.

Another Day Another Dali

When a valuable Salvador Dali painting belonging to her grandmother’s friend is mysteriously replaced by a forgery, FBI Special Agent Serena Jones is called in to investigate. Serena hopes finding the thief will also mean finally measuring up to Nana’s expectations. But when the evidence points to members of the owner’s own household, it becomes increasingly clear that Serena won’t be winning any popularity contests.

The Dali isn’t the only painting that’s fallen prey to the forgery-replacing thief, raising the specter of a sophisticated theft ring–one with links to dirty cops, an aspiring young artist, and the unsolved murder of Serena’s grandfather.Where Two Hearts Meet
In her kitchen at the Red Door Inn, executive chef Caden Holt is calm, collected, and competent. But when her boss asks her to show off their beautiful island to impress a visiting travel writer and save the inn, Caden is forced to face a world much bigger than her kitchen–and a man who makes her wish she was beautiful.

Journalist Adam Jacobs is on a forced sabbatical on Prince Edward Island. He’s also on assignment to uncover a story. Instead he’s falling in love with the island’s red shores and Caden’s sweets.

When Caden discovers Adam isn’t who she thought he was, she realizes that the article he’s writing could do more than ruin the inn’s chances for survival–it might also break her heart.

Lisa Cox Carter’s The Stronghold

Drug violence, revenge killings, and kidnapping are nothing new along the U.S.-Mexican border. But now teenage girls are disappearing from the Apache reservations of Arizona and New Mexico.

Apache tribal cop Pilar To-Clanny and FBI Special Agent Alex Torres have a long and tumultuous history. When someone close to them disappears, Pilar and Alex must risk everything to rescue the child, including facing the unresolved issues of the past, and venture into the no-man’s land of the drug cartels.

Can Pilar and Alex work together to stop a sadistic killer before he strikes again? On a quest to rescue those they love, who will rescue them?

Review

I always enjoy Ms. Carter’s books because I’m guaranteed three things: diversity, a swoony romance, and a solid mystery. My thoughts:

What I liked:

The culture. In this book, I learned much about the Apache: their culture, their history, and kind of how they think (I’m certain not all Apache fit in these categories).

Fascinating mystery. The villain was just awful, but it was fascinating how the author combined history and present day to come up with this complex mystery.

Good, solid storytelling. I definitely wanted to know what was going on and what was going to happen next.

The characters. They were rich and complex and I found that I enjoyed being in both Pilar’s and Alex’s head.

Spiritually, there was a theme of forgiveness and recognizing that God loves you.

What I didn’t like:

The romance. I didn’t care for the romance mostly because the couple fought 80% of the book. It’s hard to see them together and working things out when they’ve fought so long. Also, the reason they fought was based off of miscommunication and that’s kind of annoying as a reader when I’m thinking, please just talk.

Romantic Scale: 7

Overall, not my favorite by Ms. Carter, but still equally enjoyable.

What I’m hoping to read this week

A desperate boy. A damaged girl. And a dark house filled with secrets.

For Cameron Tate, being shuffled from foster home to foster home is just a normal way of life. Until the year he turns fourteen. That’s when he’s sent to the home of seventeen-year-old Shaye McCormick—a fellow foster kid counting the days until she’s released from the system.
For good reason. It doesn’t take long for Cameron to learn that Shaye is shackled to the worst kind of pain…living in a home where nothing seems right. And now he’s joined her with no way out. Their only refuge is a lake, a quiet spot at the edge of the property where they can sit together for a few moments at the end of each day. Alone with their thoughts. Away from prying eyes.
At the lake they become friends. At the lake they begin to talk. At the lake Cameron vows that no matter how deep their secrets are buried, he’ll make it his mission to heal Shaye from a past that makes living in the present nearly impossible. Even if it takes until the end of time to do it.

Author Note: The End of the World is a coming-of-age story that follows the lives of Cameron Tate and Shaye McCormick for twelve years. The novel is a Contemporary Romance that crosses the genres of Young Adult and New Adult. The End of the World is a standalone novel.

Interview of Olivia Rae

headshot colorThank you for being willing to be interviewed on my blog!

1. What made you first interested in writing a book?

I always liked to write when I was a child and when I was in high school, but I never thought I had the patience to sit down and write a full book. I was an avid reader and a constant day dreamer. Yet life gets in the way–college, job, marriage, and kids. It was years later when saw a news story about a group of romance writers that met at a local restaurant every month did I truly think about writing a book. I went to the meeting and met a lot of kind and helpful people. I became a writer after a lot of conferences, workshops, writing classes, and joining a critique group. I plan to write as long as I can and as long as the stories keep coming into my head.

2. Why medieval fiction?

I have a deep love of history of any kind and I love to peruse old books, manuscripts, documents, and even maps of historical and ancient places. My second book “Revelation” was actually written before the first. My character, Julian was born after reading a story handed down through the generations about a golden-haired knight that tried to save the Cross of Christ during a battle. The cross was lost, and in reality probably really wasn’t the cross Christ was killed on, but the

story got me thinking…what if. Thus Julian, my golden knight had to have his story. But I don’t only write medieval fiction, I have penned a few contemporaries as well.

3. Which authors would you say have influenced your writing the most?

I was a struggling reader when I was young, but then one day I stumbled upon a copy of the “Flame and the Flower” by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and it turned my life around. I then picked up Margret Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind” and I was hooked on reading. But my all-time favorite author has to be Harper Lee. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a masterpiece. I don’t know any author who wouldn’t like to pen a book of that quality just once.

4. Fun question: of all the books you have read, which book had the best kiss/most romantic moment?

Wow. This is a tough one. In fact, I stopped and spent a couple of days thinking about this question. I have read so many romances and so many beautiful and touching love scenes I can’t really give you an answer on this one.

5. What are you working on now?

I am actually working on the fourth and last book in my “The Sword and the Cross” series. It’s actually Hugh’s story, the brother of Julian who was the hero in book two, “Revelation.” I knew when I finished that book that Hugh would have to have a story of his own. However, before that book, “Redemption,” book three, will be coming out shortly – early spring! I know I have had many readers asking about it.

I’d just like to say thank you, Embassie for giving me the opportunity to be part of your fabulous blog. You are a gracious host.

Monday Musings…Coming out Soon!

Twenty years past, in 1757, a young Redcoat, Reginald Aubrey stole a newborn boy—the lighter-skinned of Oneida twins— during the devastating fall of Fort William Henry and raised him as his own.

No one connected to Reginald escaped unscathed from this crime. Not his adopted daughter Anna. Not Stone Thrower, the Native American father determined to get his son back. Not Two Hawks, William’s twin brother separated since birth, living in the shadow of his absence and hoping to build a future with Anna. Nor Lydia, who longs for Reginald to be free from his self-imposed emotional prison and embrace God’s forgiveness— and her love.

Now William, whose identity has been shattered after discovering the truth of his birth, hides in the ranks of an increasingly aggressive British army. The Redcoats prepare to attack frontier New York and the Continentals, aided by Oneida warriors including Two Hawks, rally to defend it. As the Revolutionary War penetrates the Mohawk Valley, two families separated by culture, united by love and faith, must find a way to reclaim the son marching toward them in the ranks of their enemies.

A Riveting Edwardian Series Set among Britain’s High Society

Lady Rowena Kinnaird may be the heiress to a Highland earldom, but she has never felt good enough–not for her father, not for the man she thought she’d marry, not for God. But after a shocking attack, she’s willing to be forever an outcast if it means escaping Loch Morar.

Brice Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, has found himself in possession of a rare treasure his enemies are prepared to kill for. While Brice has never been one to shy away from manor-born ladies, the last thing he needs is the distraction of Lady Rowena, who finds herself in a desperate situation. But when Rowena’s father tries to trap Brice into marrying his daughter, Brice makes a surprising decision.

Rowena wanted to escape the Highlands, but she’s reluctant to marry a notorious flirt. And when she learns that Brice is mixed up in questionable business with a stolen treasure, she fears she’s about to end up directly in the path of everything she was trying to avoid.

Trying to escape the shambles her con-man father has made of their reputation, Lucinda Curtis arrives in West Point, New York, determined to land a husband from the military academy. Campbell Conklin is first in his class and preparing to embark upon a storied career in the U.S. Army. Lucinda thinks Campbell will make the perfect husband . . . as long as he does not find out about her father.

Seth Westcott also has taken a liking to Lucinda. He’s kind, smart . . . and working extremely hard to graduate last. Tradition states that the worst cadets are assigned to the cavalry out west. And west is where Seth must head to track the swindler who stole all of Seth’s mother’s money. Seth is smart enough to vie for the top spot, but life isn’t fair and this is his chance to catch the man who ruined his family. It’s too bad Campbell is all shine and no substance, but Lucinda will surely see through all of that, won’t she?Men are optional. That’s the credo Emma Chandler’s suffragette aunts preached and why she started a successful women’s colony in Harper’s Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive them out, Emma admits they might need a man after all. A man who can fight–and she knows just the one.

Malachi Shaw finally earned the respect he craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma’s plea arrives, he bolts to Harper’s Station to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she’s not a girl any longer. She’s a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn’t deserve.

As the danger intensifies, old feelings grow and deepen, but Emma and Mal will need more than love to survive.

While Lydia King’s reasons for joining the Teaville Moral Society might be suspect to some members, her heart is in the right place. Because of her father’s debts and her mother’s persistent illness, her best chance at a secure future and curing her mother is to impress the politician courting her. Her first task–to ask the town’s wealthiest man to donate–seems simple enough . . . until he refuses.

Despite appearances, Nicholas Lowe wants to help others, but prefers to keep his charity private. When Lydia proves persistent, they agree to a bargain, but Nicholas still intends to do things his own way. Neither predicts what they’ll learn about true charity or foresee the complications their actions will bring to the town, forcing Lydia to decide where her beliefs and heart truly align.

So many options! Which one are you looking forward to?

Jill Williamson’s King’s Folly

Their Battle for the Throne Has Just Begun.
But Will It Matter if the World They Rule Collapses Into the Sea?

The gods are angry.

Volcanic eruptions, sinkholes, ground shakers–everything points to their unhappiness. At least that is what the king of Armania believes. His son Prince Wilek thinks his father’s superstitions are nonsense, though he remains the ever dutiful First Arm of Armania.

When a messenger arrives and claims that the town of Farway has been swallowed by the earth, the king sends Wilek to investigate. But what Wilek discovers is more cataclysmic than one lost city. Even as the ground shifts beneath his feet, Wilek sets out on a desperate journey to save his people and his world. But can he do it before the entire land crumbles?

Review

So to say I was excited to get my hands on this novel is a complete understatement (please note that the author is also releasing this book in three parts electronically, you can get started on reading it right now!). Let me tell you, I read the first chapter and my first thought was this feels like an Old Testament Bible Story. Folks, later I found out that apparently Jill was inspired by the Old Testament (I hope you’ve been reading about the old kings!). My thoughts:

What I liked:

No shying. I immediately noticed and liked that there is no shying away from real life stuff here. Some of these guys have concubines. People die. And while the author is in no way graphic, she does not ignore that kings and princes who did not follow God…did not follow God.

The characters. There are a lot of characters in this book. To be honest, more povs than I truly care for. But Ms. Williamson handles them all with a deft hand. Props to her for having different characters who felt different. There were some points of view I really loved. And may I just say that Ms. Williamson does the male pov fabulously.

Romance. There is romance. For one guy and gal it’s fairly obvious that they should end up together. For another guy, I’m not sure which gal, it depends on how this series plays out. It’s not a love triangle (at least not yet) and I am enjoying the journey.

Court politics. I love court politics. Several characters must navigate the intricacies of court life; who to be nice too, who not to speak to, who might try to kill them…

The plot. Honestly, there is a lot going on: mysteries, destruction, court politics. But I was thrilled with where Ms. Williamson ended it. A lot happens in this book, but yet when it ends it’s totally fulfilling.

Spiritually, the novel deals with the concept of multiple gods and finding, believing, and recognizing the true God. Each character’s spiritual journey keeps you on your toes.

What I didn’t like:

Some characters povs were kind of boring to me. I skimmed. And some strange spiritual weird things (people who served false gods) happened. Like weird stuff. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but really weird.

Romance scale: 7

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to what’s going to happen next. Williamson really writes characters that make you feel.
